This is a one-day intensive where students will learn the basics of marbling on fabric with plenty of hands-on experience.
We’ll discuss how to prepare fabric, how to create the ‘size’ to float our designs and learn how to mix pigments to create long-lasting prints on fabric. There will be demonstrations as we go over different techniques and patterns before students move to their mini vats for small studies and experimentation. This is where we’ll be making a variety of small cotton pieces to test ideas! Once ready, each student will marble one piece of silk yardage in a larger 3x3’ vat.
We will cover a brief history of marbling as well as some historical patterns. This will give you a great launching pad as you jump in to experiment with the basic techniques of manipulating paints on the surface of a thickened water bath. Students will have plenty of time to play with colors and patterns on small cotton swatches before moving on to their larger silk piece.
Class is scheduled for a full day (11 am-4 pm) but oftentimes wraps up early depending on how we all flow through our projects.
This class focuses on a learned skill rather than a final product. All the sampling materials are provided in your ticket cost. You’ll leave with the information and skills needed to start your at-home marbling studio along with small cotton samples and one large piece of silk measuring 35”x35”.

Class is messy! And super fun! Please bring an apron or clothes you don’t mind splattering paint on. We have a few extra aprons at the studio if needed.

While marbling is perfect for all ages, this class is best for creative teens and adults.

Feel free to pack a small lunch or snacks as there will be time for a break.

The class takes place at The Circle in Savannah, GA. We’ll be working in the art studio located behind the shop.
